چکیده

The specifications and performance of RAMP, a Reliable Adaptive Multicast Protocol, are presented. Initially described in IETF RFC 1458 [1], RAMP has been enhanced for use over an all-optical, circuit-switched, gigabit network under our ARPA-sponsored Testbed for Optical NEtworking (TBONE) project. RAMP uses immediate, receiver-initiated, NAK-based error notification combined with originator-based unicast retransmission. The approach is motivated by the loss characteristics of the TBONE network, where extremely low bit-error rates (10e-12 or better) and circuit switching make packet losses almost entirely a result of receiver buffer overflows. Hence, multicast retransmission would hinder performance through unnecessary receiver processing of redundant packets, and delayed NAKs would increase both latency and the likelihood of buffer overflow. Interestingly, TBONE loss characteristics resemble those of switched virtual circuit ATM networks and packet-switched networks employing reservation services. Hence, RAMP’s design is also relevant for conventional networks.

A Distributed Interactive Simulation Intranet Using RAMP, a Reliable Adaptive Multicast Protocol

A dynamic, heterogeneous, multicast environment has been fielded as a simulation Intranet over a wide area network (WAN) for distributed interactive simulation (DIS). By replacing the usual UDP-based unreliable broadcast and TCP-based reliable unicast mechanisms with a single multicast transport protocol (RAMP), the diverse goals of enhanced scalability, reliability (as needed), and efficient o...

Reliable Multicast in Heterogeneous Mobile Ad-hoc Networks

In disaster scenarios, communication infrastructure could be damaged or completely failed. Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) can be used to substitute failed communication devices and thus to enable communication. As group communication is an important part in disaster scenarios, multicast will be used to address several nodes. In this paper, we propose our new reliable multicast protocol RMDA (R...

Self-organizing Tree Formation Protocol and Adaptive Subcasting for EÆcient Reliable Multicast

We present a self-organizing tree formation protocol, STFP, for one-to-many reliable multicasts. STFP constructs a minimum spanning tree of receivers over the underlying multicast routing tree. Based on the tree built by STFP, we develop eÆcient one-tomany reliable multicast protocols that use unicast and/or subcast for retransmitting lost packets. We also describe two novel adaptive subcasting...

Reliable adaptive lightweight multicast protocol

Typical applications of mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) require group-oriented services. Digital battlefields and disaster relief operations make data dissemination and teleconferences a key application domain. Network-supported multicast is hence critical for efficient any-to-many communications. However, very little work has been done on “reliable” transport multicast. We propose and evaluate ...

Adaptive Reliable Multicast

An increasing number of applications, such as distributed interactive simulation, live auctions, distributed games and collaborative systems, require the network to provide a reliable multicast service. This service enables one sender to reliably transmit data to multiple receivers. Reliability is traditionally achieved by having receivers send negative acknowledgments (NACKs) to request from t...
